The South China Morning Post reported that the patient began treatment in 2021 and has not needed medication since 2022.
A treatment discovered by Chinese scientists involves artificial cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, which helps control blood sugar levels.
According to the report, the patient involved in the study had been suffering from type 2 diabetes for 25 years and his pancreatic cells had almost stopped functioning, due to which he had to take several daily injections of insulin.
Researchers at Shanghai Changzheng Hospital developed this treatment and reported that the patient's risk of serious complications from diabetes was greatly increased, so we decided to try the experimental treatment.
The patient was transplanted with cells in July 2021, and 11 weeks later, he did not need insulin injections. The dose of oral medication was gradually reduced and a year later, he was no longer required. was completely abolished.
Even later, the health of the patient was monitored, which revealed that the functions of the pancreatic cells of this person have been completely restored.
The patient has been free from diabetes for 33 months now.
For this method of treatment, the researchers changed the mononuclear cells of the patient's blood into pancreatic cells.
